Ballymun (Baile Munna in Irish) is an area on Dublin's Northside close to Dublin Airport currently undergoing demolition and regeneration. Located on Dublin's Northside close to Dublin Airport , it is currently best known for the Ballymun flats, a development of seven apartment towers and many smaller "step-up" blocks (i.e. no elevator). The seven towers are currently in the process of being demolished.
Historically, Ballymun was a larger area than it is now, but due to what were seen to be undesirable associations, the area has shrunk since the completion of the flats. For instance in the early days of Dublin City University, then called National Institute for Higher Education, Dublin, this institution was referred to as being in Ballymun (part of the "Ballymun Project") whilst today it is referred to and has a postal address in Glasnevin even though it has not changed location, indeed much of the present day Ballymun town center comprised of the northern site of Albert Agricultural College, the forerunner of the present-day university, Dublin City University. Despite these slightly negative associations Ballymun is in fact a thriving community with a high standard of living. New housing estates are currently being built and will most likely be bought by young aspiring businessmen as their first step on the Property ladder. The rest will be occupied by the former residents of the flats. Streets have also been renamed, for example the now Glasnevin Avenue was formerly called Ballymun Avenue. The term "Glasnevin North" also appeared to describe areas formerly part of Ballymun.
The lines "I see seven towers/But I only see one way out" in the U2 song 'Running To Stand Still' are a reference to the towers in Ballymun.
Moreover, in the U2 song 'Bad', the song and lyrical focus is on drug use in the Ballymun flats. (Taken from Wikipedia article on Ballymun) |

When I was old enough to answer questions from others. The first question you were often asked by people who were not from Ballymun was...
"so do you live in a flat or a house?" (Oh I might just add here that finding out you were from Ballymun in the first place was usually enough to make them look for the closest exit, should you at any moment wish to dive across the table and beat them to a pulp for no reason what so ever.
ah the media you gotta love'em)
After a few seconds, when they had recovered their composure and realised that they still had all their own teeth and full
independent use of their limbs and that their current state of good health was likely to remain long after you had left their
company, they would push on with their questions.

Wednesday, 12 April 2006 |
Well known as a community activist, musician & Ballymun Partnership employee Derek Fitzpatrick died suddenly at his home on February 13th 2006.
I knew Derek as a gentleman, always friendly, always positive and enthusiastic, and these qualities were reflected in his actions as he demonstrated his comittment to the Ballymun community daily.
Derek always looked youthful, happy and enjoyed good health (I used to train with him in the DCU gym) which makes his sudden parting even more shocking to me. I feel privelaged to have known Derek and on behalf of myself & newballymun.com I wish to express my condolences to his family.
Derek was aged 54.
Click Here for a proper tribute to Derek by those who knew him better, his colleagues & co-workers.

We're back online after the site was hacked. This unfortunately is one
of the hazards of being a popular site on the public internet. The hackers
appeared to have exploited published vulnerabilities in the CMS system that we
use. Luckily we have managed to restore from a recent backup of the site
however, there has been some data loss in the form of some forum posts and
recent member signups.
We will be shortly migrating the site to another CMS system in order to
harden the site security and prevent this from happening again in the future.
Many thanks for your patience

Council ‘must’ take over Ballymun pool |

Thursday, 29 December 2005 |
THE management of the new Ballymun Swimming Pool must be taken over by Dublin
City Council, politicians said this week. Their call comes following the
decision of the existing management to hand over its rights. The €7 million
facility has been left vacant and unused for months despite the investment made
by the Government.
Cllr Julia Carmichael (FF) believes that the facility could be opened in the
very near future if Dublin City Council was to take control.
"It is sickening to see this fantastic facility being left empty after all that
money was spent on getting it built," she said.
